Our Story
As a local, family-owned business with over 15 years of structural carpentry experience, we specialise in designing and building bespoke timber decks that are as functional as they are beautiful. Every project is thoughtfully designed to suit the home, the site and the people who’ll enjoy it.
We chose the name Against The Grain because it reflects the way we work. We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all solutions or taking shortcuts. Instead, we take the time to understand your vision, carefully select quality materials, and build every deck with the structural integrity, craftsmanship and attention to detail it deserves.
From the first conversation through to the final handover, you’ll work directly with the people building your project. We believe great communication, honest advice, and exceptional workmanship are just as important as the finished result. That’s how we create outdoor spaces you’ll love spending time in.

Zac Hancock
Director & Lead Carpenter
Zac began his carpentry apprenticeship at just 15 years old. Without a driver’s licence, he would travel to site by bus or train, often skateboarding the final stretch. It was an early indication of the determination, discipline and work ethic that would go on to shape his career.
Over the years, Zac has built extensive experience across residential and commercial carpentry, developing a reputation for precision, considered craftsmanship and an uncompromising approach to quality. In 2023, he founded ATG Carpentry & Joinery with a clear vision: to deliver exceptional workmanship, honest service and outdoor spaces designed and built to stand the test of time.
Today, Zac specialises in custom decking, outdoor living and structural carpentry. With a strong eye for detail and a genuine appreciation for quality materials and thoughtful design, he approaches every project with the same level of care and attention he would expect in his own home.
Outside of work, Zac enjoys designing and building custom furniture, playing the drums and piano, and spending time with his wife, Yas, and their dogs.
Yasmin Poulose-Hancock
Business & Operations Manager
With more than 10 years of experience across the construction and trades industry, Yasmin brings a strong understanding of project coordination, client communication and the detail required to deliver an exceptional experience from beginning to end.
As Business & Operations Manager at ATG Carpentry & Joinery, Yasmin has played an integral role in the business’s growth and development, working alongside Zac to shape its operations and client experience. She oversees the day-to-day running of the business, from client enquiries and quotations to scheduling, supplier coordination, invoicing and project administration, ensuring every stage is carefully coordinated behind the scenes.
Yasmin believes the experience surrounding a project should reflect the same level of quality as the finished work. Her focus on clear communication, organisation and attention to detail ensures clients feel informed and supported from their initial enquiry through to completion.
Outside of work, Yasmin loves exploring new places with Zac, soaking up the sunshine, cooking and spending time with their dogs.
Tyson Lehman
Apprentice Carpenter
Having known Zac for more than 10 years, Tyson joined ATG Carpentry & Joinery with an existing foundation of trust, shared values and a strong understanding of the standards Zac brings to his work.
After studying law and working in the support sector, Tyson made the decision to pursue a career that better aligned with his interest in craftsmanship and working with his hands, leading him to begin his carpentry apprenticeship with ATG.
Working closely alongside Zac, Tyson is developing his skills across residential and commercial carpentry, with a strong focus on precision, attention to detail and quality workmanship. His maturity, reliability and strong work ethic have made him a valued part of the team as he continues to develop his craft.
Outside of work, Tyson enjoys spending time with his partner and son and catching the latest movies.
